Bohemian Days in Fleet Street

This is a love letter to a vanished London. William Mackay, writing in 1913, looks back on his youth in Fleet Street during the 1870s and 1880s with the tender melancholy of a man mourning a world that no longer exists. The journalists he remembers were a different breed: bohemians who worked hard, drank harder, and lived with an infectious exuberance that Mackay sees vanishing from the modern press. He offers vivid anecdotes and affectionate portraits of a world where the job was less profession than calling, where newsrooms hummed with camaraderie and wit, where a certain rough nobility animated the trade. The book is an elegy not just for a profession but for a way of living: spirited, imperfect, and alive in ways the quieter, anxious journalism of Mackay's present could not match. Anyone who longs for the romance of old print, the secret history of London's literary underbelly, or simply the bittersweet pleasure of watching something beautiful disappear will find much to love here.
