Bloody Beaches: The Marines at Peleliu

September 15, 1944. The 1st Marine Division hits the beaches of Peleliu expecting a quick胜利. What they find is hell on earth. Gordon D. Gayle, a Marine who bled on that island, delivers an unflinching account of one of the Pacific War's most brutal and controversial battles. The pre-landing bombardment had supposedly softened Japanese defenses. It hadn't. The coral ridge towering above the beach concealed a fortress of interlocking tunnels, pillboxes, and mortars that turned the sand into a killing ground. Within hours, the 1st Marine Division suffers casualties that would have ended most units. Major General William H. Rupertus, the division commander, faces a nightmare decision: push forward into the maw or withdraw and admit failure. Captain George P. Hunt and his men embody the terrible arithmetic of Peleliu, where heroism and horror become indistinguishable. Gayle writes not from the distance of a historian but from the muscle memory of a survivor. This is what it sounds like when Marines describe the worst thirty-six hours of their lives.
