Blackwood's Edinburgh Magazine, Volume 63, No. 387, January, 1848

January 1848: Europe stands on the edge of revolution. In this issue of Blackwood's, the era's most influential Tory periodical turns its formidable intellect to a Britain in crisis. The opening essay dissects three decades of liberal legislation with barely contained alarm, arguing that the Bank Restriction Act and its aftermath have gutted British manufacturing while inflaming unrest in Ireland. The piece invokes Dr. Johnson and Napoleon alike to make a bracing argument: orthodox economic wisdom has consistently contradicted lived experience. What follows is a portrait of a society confronting the fruits of its own policy choices, from rising poverty to collapsing industries. This is not nostalgic elegy but furious contemporary diagnosis, the work of intellectuals who believed their nation was reaping what it had sown. For readers interested in primary sources of Victorian political thought, or anyone curious about how intelligent people understood the pre-revolutionary moment, this issue offers a vivid window into mid-19th century anxieties about empire, economy, and the social contract.
