Blackwood's Edinburgh Magazine, Volume 59, No. 363, January, 1846

Blackwood's Edinburgh Magazine was the pulse of Victorian Britain, a place where law, literature, and political opinion collided. This January 1846 issue opens with a meditation on Sir William Follett, the Attorney-General whose death at 46 shocked the legal establishment. The magazine traces his brilliant but exhausting career: the arguments before Parliament, the family he supported, the health that failed under the weight of ambition. Beyond the legal world, this issue offers poetry, cultural commentary, and sharp political takes that would have circulated in drawing rooms and Inns of Court across Britain. It's a window into what educated Victorians were reading, arguing about, and mourning in the winter of 1846. For anyone curious about the real texture of 19th-century intellectual life, not the polished version history remembers, but the raw, immediate concerns of the day, this is it.
