Blacker's Art of Fly Making, &c.: Comprising Angling, & Dyeing of Colours, with Engravings of Salmon & Trout Flies

Before Instagram tutorials and YouTube videos, there was W. Blacker. This 1842 guide to the vanishing arts of fly making and color dyeing opens a window into a world where anglers mixed their own pigments from plants and minerals, where patience was a prerequisite rather than a virtue. Blacker was a working fisherman who had spent decades on British rivers, and he wrote not to display learning but to transmit hard-won knowledge: how to select hackle and silk, how to construct a salmon fly that tricks a wary fish, how to dye wool and feather in shades that no commercial product can match. The book includes a catechism for beginners, making it one of the earliest structured courses in fly tying ever published. Whether you approach it as a practitioner seeking historical technique, a collector drawn to rare sporting literature, or a reader curious about pre-industrial craftsmanship, Blacker offers something no modern app can replicate: the particular satisfaction of learning a skill the old way, step by patient step.
