Birds of the Plains

In the dying light of the British Raj, a civil servant turned ornithologist wanders the Indian plains with a notebook and a peculiar longing: to find his beloved British songbirds reimagined in an alien landscape. Douglas Dewar's 1908 volume is neither a dry scientific catalog nor a sentimental nature essay, but something rarer: the observations of a man discovering that home exists everywhere, if you know how to look for it. He tracks the sparrow that isn't quite the sparrow he knew in Kent, the barn owl whose Indian cry differs subtly from its English cousin, and dozens of species that are at once familiar and strange. Dewar writes with the quiet pleasure of recognition crossed with discovery, comparing habits, plumage, and song across thousands of miles. The sixteen photographs capture birds in life, lending an immediacy that transcends the century between then and now. This is a book for anyone who has ever traveled far and found a piece of home in an unexpected place, or who wants to understand how the British naturalists saw India's wilderness before it changed forever.
