Biology and Its Makers: With Portraits and Other Illustrations

In 1908, a pioneering American biologist set out to do something no one had attempted before: tell the story of biology through the lives of the people who built it. William A. Locy, founder of the Marine Biological Laboratory at Woods Hole, traces the grand arc of biological discovery from Aristotle's speculations to the revolutionary breakthroughs of the 19th century, showing how a fragmented collection of observations slowly cohered into a unified science. The book pulses with the excitement of intellectual combat: the fierce debates over spontaneous generation, the decades-long struggle to understand cell structure, and the seismic shift Darwin's theory brought to every branch of natural knowledge. Locy writes with the tenderness of someone who knew many of these pioneers personally, rendering their failures, obsessions, and moments of brilliant insight with novelistly depth. This is notdry chronicle but a living conversation across centuries, revealing how microscopy opened invisible worlds and how the quest to understand life forced humanity to reconsider its place in nature. For anyone curious about how we came to know what we know about living things, this book offers both education and inspiration.
