Biography of Rev. Hosea Ballou

In the early Republic's fevered religious landscape, one man's ideas about God's mercy sparked a revolution. Hosea Ballou grew up poor, fatherless in all but strict theology, raised on a New Hampshire farm where hellfire was preached with conviction. Yet this brilliant, stubborn boy dared to ask: what if God's love was truly for everyone? The biography traces his transformation from itinerant schoolteacher to the most controversial preacher in America, the man who made Universalism a force that shook the churches of New England. Written by his son Maturin, this is not mere hagiography but a son's reckoning with a father who was both saint and radical, whose embrace of universal salvation cost him church positions and respectability but gained him thousands of followers. The book captures a moment when American religion was being remade by a theology of radical hope.
