Biographical Memorials of James Oglethorpe: Founder of the Colony of Georgia, in North America.

Thaddeus Mason Harris's 1841 biography resurrects one of colonial America's most idealistic founders from relative obscurity. James Oglethorpe conceived Georgia not as a commercial venture but as a humanitarian experiment - a refuge for Britain's poor, imprisoned debtors, and desperate families seeking land and dignity. Harris traces Oglethorpe's path from his compassionate observations of London's debtors' prisons to his audacious proposal for a new colony governed by principles that seemed radical for the era: no slavery, land for the landless, and cooperative governance. The biography captures Oglethorpe's remarkable friendship with Tomochichi, the Muscogee leader who became his ally and guest in England, and details the founding of Savannah in 1733. Harris writes with the reverence of a generation that saw these founders as a nation's birthright, making this both a portrait of one man and a window into how early Americans remembered their origins. For readers interested in colonial history, humanitarian ideals, or the forgotten alternatives to Georgia's later slave-holding past, Harris's work preserves details and perspectives that enrich our understanding of what America was imagined to become.
