Billy Whiskers in France

Billy Whiskers is no ordinary goat. When the American regiment adopts him as their mascot, they get far more than a fluffy companion: they get a creature of uncanny intelligence, stubborn independence, and an wanderlust that no fence can contain. Sent to France during the Great War, Billy finds himself thrust into a world of muddy trenches, marching soldiers, and a longing for the Connecticut farm where he was born. When separation from his regiment leaves him alone in a foreign country, he must rely on his wits and his wily nature to survive the chaos of wartime France. The journey that follows is part odyssey, part survival story, and entirely befitting a goat who has never met a closed gate he couldn't figure out. Though written for children in the early twentieth century, the novel captures something timeless: the ache of being far from home, the strange comfort of finding courage you didn't know you had, and the stubborn belief that no matter how lost you feel, the path back exists if you're clever enough to find it.
