Bible (KJV) NT 04: John
The Gospel of John stands apart from the three other gospels, opening not with Jesus's birth but with a thunderous theological declaration: 'In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.' Where Matthew, Mark, and Luke tell the story of Jesus through parables and rapid action, John meditates on deeper mystery. This is the gospel of signs: water turned to wine at a wedding in Cana, a man born blind given sight, Lazarus raised from the dead. These are not mere miracles but revelations of who Jesus truly is. Through intimate conversations with Nicodemus about being 'born again,' with the Samaritan woman at the well about living water, and with his disciples at the Last Supper about love and abiding, John paints a portrait of Christ as divine Logos, the Light come into darkness. It concludes with perhaps the most direct statement of purpose in all scripture: 'that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing you may have life in his name.' For two thousand years, this gospel has shaped how Christians understand the heart of their faith.
