Beyond the Marne: Quincy, Huiry, Voisins Before and During the Battle

Written in 1918 while shells still fell on French soil, this is no distant history of the Great War but a woman's raw, immediate account of watching her world crack apart. Henriette Cuvru-Magot was there when the trains stopped running and the streets filled with men in uniform. She was there when wounded soldiers began streaming through her village of Voisins, when neighbors became refugees, when the Marne River that had always meant home now meant invasion. She records the small braveries that big histories erase: the woman who kept cooking despite the shells, the villagers who turned barns into hospitals, the terrible patience of waiting for news of the living and the dead. This is history from the ground, from a woman who had no army to command, no strategy to debate, only the courage of remaining in place while everything burned.
