Bennett's Small House Catalog, 1920

Step inside the American imagination of 1920. This catalog presents fifty-six house designs that once guided thousands of families toward the dream of homeownership: cozy cottages, airy bungalows, and dignified colonials, each rendered in photograph and floor plan. But this is more than a pattern book. It is a frozen moment in American history, capturing what a generation believed a home should be: affordable yet dignified, modern yet rooted, a space where radiators hummed and French doors opened onto porches where evenings stretched long. The catalog also includes the details that made these houses live: garage models, gleaming fixtures, kitchen cabinets, the infrastructure of comfort. For historians, these pages document the material culture of the emerging middle class. For restorers and preservationists, they are a practical treasure, offering authentic blueprints for houses now nearly a century old. Whether you dream of building one of these designs or simply want to understand what Americans aspired to a century ago, this catalog opens a door.
