Benedetto Croce: An Introduction to His Philosophy

Benedetto Croce (1866-1952) was the dominant intellectual figure in Italy for decades, a philosopher whose work reshaped aesthetics, historiography, and political theory. This concise introduction, written in 1922 by Raffaello Piccoli, captures Croce's philosophy at a crucial moment in its development, before the full weight of fascism and world war would test its commitment to freedom and historical truth. Piccoli traces the arc of Croce's thought through its biographical and intellectual origins: his formation under influential mentors, the devastating personal losses that shaped his mature vision, and the intellectual currents of post-Risorgimento Italy that he both inherited and transformed. What emerges is not a rigid system but a living philosophy, one that Croce himself continued to revise through decades of reflection. This introduction remains essential for understanding how one of Europe's most sophisticated thinkers conceived of art as intuition, history as perpetual dialogue, and philosophy as an endless act of freedom. Ideal for students of philosophy, Italian studies, or anyone seeking to understand the intellectual foundations of twentieth-century European thought.
