Beknopte Geschiedenis Van Het Vaderland

The Netherlands exists because for centuries, the Dutch fought the sea itself. Wijnne's landmark history traces how a low-lying strip of marsh and sand became a nation, from the earliest Frisian and Batavian peoples through Roman conquest, the chaotic rise of feudalism, and the extraordinary emergence of the Dutch Republic. Written in the late 19th century when Dutch national identity was being actively shaped, this work represents the foundational narrative through which generations understood their past. The book reveals how geography forged a stubborn, mercantile, and remarkably resilient people who transformed a flood-prone delta into a global trading empire. Wijnne traces the complex interplay with neighboring territories like Belgium, showing how Dutch independence emerged from centuries of political negotiation and resistance to larger powers. For anyone seeking to understand the roots of Dutch culture, its peculiar blend of Calvinist thrift and seafaring daring, this remains an essential window into the formation of a small nation's enormous sense of itself.
