Behind the Scenes in Warring Germany

Edward Lyell Fox was an American journalist embedded with the Kaiser's armies during the First World War, and this book is his electrifying account of what he witnessed behind the German front lines. Traveling from Amsterdam into a nation locked in total war, Fox encountered a society transformed: every border crossing bristled with suspicion, every train compartment hummed with whispered anxieties, every face betrayed the strain of a people at breaking point. He walked the corridors of power, observed the military machine up close, and recorded the contradictions of a proud empire slowly strangling under the weight of its own ambition. What makes this account endure is Fox's outsider's eye for detail. As an American correspondent in a country that viewed outsiders with deep distrust, he was simultaneously granted access yet never quite trusted. The book captures Berlin during wartime, the military headquarters, the growing cracks beneath surface discipline. For readers seeking primary source accounts of WWI beyond the familiar British and French perspectives, or anyone fascinated by the machinery of war as seen by those who covered it, this is an indispensable window into the German experience from an American who was there.
