Beethoven, a Character Study; Together with Wagner's Indebtedness to Beethoven

Beethoven wasn't merely a composer. He was a revolutionary who shattered the classical tradition and rebuilt it in his own image. This early 20th-century character study traces that seismic transformation, from Beethoven's difficult youth in Bonn under a tyrannical father and alongside a loving mother, through his tumultuous Vienna years where political upheaval and personal suffering forged an uncompromising artistic vision. The book examines not only his philosophical approach to music but also the profound debt Richard Wagner owed to his predecessor. For anyone seeking to understand how one man transformed Western music and shaped the course of romantic opera, this analytical portrait offers both historical context and deep appreciation of Beethoven's enduring influence.
