Beautiful Gardens in America

Before American gardens became the manicured extensions of European tradition, they were something wilder and more honest. Louise Shelton's lovingly detailed guidebook captures a pivotal moment in the early 1900s when American gardeners began rejecting classical formality in favor of something distinctly their own. Through her prose and illustrations, we travel from New England to the South to the West, encountering gardens shaped by climate, regional character, and the fierce independence of their makers. Shelton argues that American beauty lies not in imported architectural grandeur but in the living, breathing expressions of plants allowed to grow in their own nature. She offers practical wisdom alongside cultural observation, documenting a generation of gardeners who decided that authenticity mattered more than imitation. For anyone who tends a plot of earth or wonders why American gardens look the way they do today, this book reveals the creative turning point where a distinctly national landscape tradition was born.
