Battery E in France: 149th Field Artillery, Rainbow (42nd) Division

This is WWI as lived, not as commemorated. Frederic Richard Kilner served in Battery E of the 149th Field Artillery, part of the 42nd Rainbow Division, and his memoir captures what it felt like to leave behind ordinary American life in 1917 and step into the machine of modern war. The Rainbow Division earned its name from the far-flung National Guard units that comprised it, men from every corner of the country bound together by nothing but training, duty, and the peculiar intimacy of those who share foxholes and freight cars. Kilner writes with clarity about the anxiety of deployment, the strange boredom between bombardments, and the forging of friendships under conditions no civilian can fully imagine. His account honors fallen comrades without sentimentality, documenting the daily rhythms of soldiers who wrote letters, played cards, endured cold, and waited for orders that might send them toward shells or gas. This is primary source history at its most human: not strategic overviews or battlefield analyses, but the texture of ordinary men doing extraordinary things.
