Baptism According to Scripture

In an age of theological upheaval, E. H. Hoare turns to the only source that matters: Scripture itself. Written in the mid-19th century, this rigorous examination traces the doctrine of baptism from its roots in the Old Testament covenants through the revolutionary ministry of John the Baptist to the explicit teachings of Christ and his apostles. Hoare does not impose later theological frameworks onto the biblical text. Instead, he lets the passages speak, building his case brick by brick from the words of prophets, evangelists, and Paul himself. The result is both methodical and passionate. For those who want to know what the Bible actually teaches about this sacrament rather than what tradition has prescribed, Hoare offers a model of careful, disciplined reading.
