Aventures De L'abbé De Choisy Habillé En Femme

This is one of the most extraordinary documents of early modern gender experience ever written. François-Timoléon de Choisy composed his memoir in the 1680s, recounting a life lived on the boundaries of gender in 17th-century France. His mother dressed him as a girl until age eighteen, initially to curry favor with Queen Anne of Austria and gain entry to the court of Monsieur, Louis XIV's brother. But the experiment outlasted its practical purpose. Choisy discovered he enjoyed being a woman, presenting himself in society as Madame de Sancy, receiving romantic attention from men, and finding genuine happiness in feminine identity. What makes this memoir so striking is its matter-of-fact tone. Choisy writes without shame, without apology, without modern identity frameworks. He simply describes how he moved through the world and the pleasure he found in being seen as a woman. The result is a document that challenges our assumptions about historical gender rigidity, revealing that early modern Europe contained more room for gender nonconformity than we typically imagine. Part confession, part court memoir, part philosophical reflection on desire and happiness, this text reads like sophisticated gossip from a clever nobleman who happened to live his life in a costume that happened to fit.
