Autobiography of Seventy Years, Vol. 1-2

George Frisbie Hoar was eight years old when his grandfather died, an old man who had loaded his musket at Bunker Hill. By the time the younger Hoar himself reached seventy, he had become a United States Senator who had witnessed the nation tear itself apart and slowly stitch itself back together. This autobiography is his attempt to hold both history and memory in the same hand, to capture what he knew of the Revolution's final soldiers and what he lived through as a Republican fighting through Reconstruction, the impeachment of a president, and America's sudden emergence as an imperial power. Hoar writes with the clear-eyed melancholy of a man who understands that every memoir is already an act of loss: details fade, witnesses die, and the past becomes another country one must describe to strangers. His anecdotes about Revolutionary ancestors and nineteenth-century political battles are not heroics but inheritances, passed down and now passed on. For readers drawn to primary sources, the unpolished voices of people who were actually there, these volumes offer something rare: a senator's candid reckoning with his own century, written by someone who knew Lincoln, argued with Grant, and could still remember the smell of gunpowder from a war he was too young to fight.
