Autobiography of Matthew Scott, Jumbo's Keeper; Also Jumbo's Biography, by the Same Author

In an age when animals were spectacles and keepers were invisible, Matthew Scott stepped forward to tell Jumbo's story, and in doing so, became the author of one of the earliest animal keeper memoirs in English. Written in the late 19th century, this dual autobiography and biography traces Scott's journey from humble English beginnings to his appointment as keeper at the Zoological Society's Gardens in London, where he was assigned a young African elephant named Jumbo who would become the most famous animal in the world. Through Scott's eyes, we encounter not a performing spectacle but a companion of extraordinary intelligence and gentle humor, a being whose death would devastate millions. Beyond Jumbo, Scott writes of the broader menagerie: the challenges of caring for exotic creatures in an era before modern zoology, the daily dramas of the Victorian circus, and the quiet devotion required to tend creatures who could never speak their gratitude. The result is a remarkable time capsule of Victorian popular culture, a window into a world where a working-class man and a massive grey elephant forged a friendship that transcended species, and a testament to the ancient human impulse to love the non-human souls in our care.
