Australian Fairy Tales

This collection begins with an irresistible challenge: a father's daughter demands to know why no fairy books mention Australia. "Are there any Australian Fairies, Father?" she asks. With characteristic paternal confidence, he assures her that indeed there are "whole tribes" of them, and the stories flow from there. Hume-Cook constructs a distinctly Antipodean fairy realm where the Australian landscape becomes magical territory: the waratah blooms as royalty, the bush conceals enchanted wells, and native creatures share the stage with whimsical sprites. Prince Waratah serves as the central hero, embarking on quests that blend classic fairy tale structures with elements drawn from the Australian environment. These are gentle stories of adventure, romance, and moral clarity where friendship proves essential and goodness ultimately prevails. The charm lies partly in the frame narrative itself: a family gathered on Sunday evenings, with father inventing these tales in real time. Nearly a century old, these stories offer a window into an early attempt to create an indigenous Australian literary tradition for children, one that locates wonder in the local rather than importing it from abroad.
