Auld Lang Syne: Selections from the Papers of the "Pen and Pencil Club

What we have here is a genuine artifact of literary fellowship: a collection drawn from the papers of the Pen and Pencil Club, those anonymous writers who gathered to commit their thoughts to verse and prose in an age before fame became the measure of worth. These selections move through the familiar territories of the sentimental tradition, love in its various phases, the natural world as mirror and sanctuary, and above all, the ache of time's passage. The poems possess that particular quality of earlier centuries, where feeling was not yet embarrassed to name itself directly, where a glance could trembled into reverie and a memory could collapse into melody. The club's members wrote for each other, for the drawer, for the pleasure of shaping emotion into language, a practice now almost vanished. This is not great literature in the sense that would command canons, but it is genuine literature in another sense: writing undertaken in joy, offered in fellowship, preserved because someone thought these small voices deserved hearing. For readers who find modern literary culture exhausting in its ironic distance, these pages offer the simpler pleasure of words spoken plainly from the heart.
