Auf Silbernen Gefilden: Ein Mond-Roman

Jerzy Zulawski's 1903 masterpiece opens with a mystery: an observatory assistant rediscovers a manuscript sealed inside an iron sphere that crash-landed on Earth, revealing the fate of a lunar expedition launched fifty years earlier. What begins as a tale of exploration becomes something far stranger and more haunting. The astronauts survived their landing on the moon's far side, where they discovered a hidden, habitable valley bathed in perpetual silver light. They settled. They multiplied. And their descendants forgot they were ever from Earth at all. This is the story of that lost civilization, its rise, its fractures, and the fundamental alienation of a people who no longer remember what they lost. Lem praised Zulawski for building an entire world from nothing but astronomical data and imaginative rigor, yet the novel's true power lies in its meditation on memory, origin, and what it means to be human when the Earth is only a legend. One of the founding texts of modern science fiction, and still among its most philosophically unsettling.
