At the Emperor's Wish: A Tale of the New Japan

Japan, 1868. The old order is collapsing. Emperor Meiji has restored imperial rule, and the samurai who once held power are now adrift in a world that no longer needs their swords. Kudo Jukichi, a proud warrior, watches his identity dissolve as the new Japan embraces Western technology and discards the traditions that gave his life meaning. Meanwhile, Kutami Chobei, a commoner long excluded from the ruling class, sees opportunity in the chaos of modernization. Their lives intersect in a story that captures the human cost of progress: what happens to honor when the system that defined it disappears? What happens to a society when old hierarchies crumble overnight? Davis writes with sympathy for all his characters, never reducing the conflict to simple villains and heroes. This is a novel about the pain of adaptation, the grief of lost identity, and the question every transformative era asks: can we become new without betraying who we were?
