At Suvla Bay: Being the Notes and Sketches of Scenes, Characters and Adventures of the Dardanelles Campaign, Made by John Hargrave ("white Fox") While Serving with the 32nd Field Ambulance, X Division, Mediterranean Expeditionary Force, During the Great War.

Written in the fires of 1917, this is not a retrospective war memoir but a document composed in real time, sketches made in mud between casualties, notes jotted in the chaos of a field hospital while shells fell nearby. John Hargrave served with the 32nd Field Ambulance at Suvla Bay, one of the most disastrous landings of the Gallipoli Campaign, and his account captures what soldiers actually saw: not glory, but the grinding absurdity of war, the strange camaraderie of exhausted men, and the particular horror of trying to save lives in a place designed to take them. Hargrave's drawings lend visual immediacy to prose that already vibrates with it. He begins with reluctant enlistment, the absurd medical examination, the train journey to Aldershot filled with ordinary men suddenly become soldiers, and then descends into the real subject: the coast of Turkey, the corpses in the water, and the small acts of care that persisted anyway. This is war documentation stripped of later rationalization, a medic's eye view of catastrophe.
