At Minas Basin, and Other Poems

A collection of poetry rooted in the tidal mysteries of Nova Scotia's Minas Basin, where Theodore H. Rand found in mudflats and fog what others might miss: a language for time's passage and the heart's quiet losses. Written in 1897, these verses carry the particular loneliness of a 19th-century Canadian consciousness, one that found the sublime not in mountain peaks but in the slow pull of the Bay of Fundy's impossible tides, in the way light breaks through maritime cloud. Rand writes of love and its absence with a restraint that makes the grief land harder, his personified landscapes acting as witnesses to what cannot be said directly. The sea here is not decorative backdrop but active participant in the poems' philosophical turnings. This is verse for readers who understand that nature poetry at its best is really about how small we are against geological time, and how that smallness somehow consoles.
