Around the Boree Log, and Other Verses

Picture a fire crackling in the Australian outback, a circle of faces lit by flames, and someone beginning a story about the land, survival, and belonging. This 1921 collection of 46 poems captures the raw, unvarnished spirit of bush life: sunburnt plains, rugged ranges, and the Irish-Australian families who carved existence from stubborn earth. John O'Brien writes with swinging rhythms and dry humor that makes the hardship breathe, laugh, and ache. These aren't romanticized verses about the noble pioneer; they're honest portraits of sweat, stubbornness, and the quiet heroism of mothers who raised families where the next water source determined everything. The poems gather you around that boree log and refuse to let you leave untouched. For anyone seeking to understand where Australia came from, or simply wanting verse that crackles like a campfire, these lines still burn.
