Army Letters from an Officer's Wife, 1871-1888

These are not memoirs polished for publication, but something rarer: seventeen years of private letters never meant to be read by anyone but their intended recipient. Frances Marie Antoinette Mack Roe arrived at Fort Lyon, Colorado, in 1871 as a young bride uncertain of her surroundings, and what unfolds in these pages is a woman slowly, often reluctantly, falling in love with a landscape that nearly broke her. She writes of arduous journeys, menacing frontier towns, the peculiar loneliness of being the only officer's wife at a remote post, and the absurd social rituals of army life. Yet there is humor here too, and wonder: the excitement of seeing wild buffalo, the strange friendships formed in places where women were scarce, the daily negotiations of survival in a harsh and captivating landscape. The letters document a vanishing world, capturing the American West at a pivotal turning point through eyes that both resist and embrace it.
