Armenia and the War

In 1917, as the Great War ground toward its bloody conclusion, one voice emerged from the silence: A.P. Hacobian, an Armenian speaking directly to the British people about what his people had endured. This is not a history textbook. It is an urgent, desperate appeal from a man watching his nation be erased. Hacobian documents what the world was only beginning to understand: the systematic destruction of the Armenian people beginning in 1915. The deportations, the mass killings, the villages burned, the lives obliterated. He names the horror plainly, presenting evidence and testimony with the precision of someone who knows that silence equals complicity. But this is also a political argument of considerable force. Hacobian addresses the Allied powers waging war in the name of civilization and asks a simple question: what does your victory mean if you abandon us? Written as the war still raged, the book carries the desperate urgency of a man begging for his people's survival before it is too late. It remains essential reading for anyone seeking to understand how genocide was witnessed and testified to in real time, and how the victims themselves demanded to be heard.
