Armenia and the Armenians: A List of References in the New York Public Library

This is a bibliographic artifact from a year of unspeakable darkness. Compiled by the New York Public Library in 1919, at the moment the Armenian Genocide was still unfolding, it stands as an inventory of everything American scholars and readers could access about Armenia and its people. The timing is haunting: as Ottoman authorities systematically erased Armenian communities from their historic lands, this volume preserved, in catalog form, what the Western world had written about Armenian history, literature, culture, and resilience. The opening sections trace Armenians from their ancient roots through centuries of empire, their early adoption of Christianity, and the literary achievements that survived despite political subjugation. The bibliography that follows categorizes hundreds of scholarly works, creating a snapshot of knowledge about a people facing mass destruction. For historians and anyone concerned with cultural preservation, this is not merely a reference work, it is a testament to what archives can hold when a nation is being erased.
