Armed with Madness

Step into a fever dream of myth and modernity as a bohemian collective in a remote Cornish cottage unearths an ancient cup from a forgotten well. This isn't just any artifact; it's potentially the Holy Grail, and its discovery acts as a catalyst, stripping bare the fragile camaraderie of these uneasy friends. As the cup's mysterious history intertwines with their own tangled desires, fears, and rivalries, their shared idyll descends into a psychological battleground, echoing ancient myths with a distinctly Freudian twist. Mary Butts masterfully crafts a narrative where the sacred and the profane, the mythical and the mundane, collide with intoxicating force. Butts's prose is a shimmering, allusive tapestry, inviting readers to surrender to its kaleidoscopic, dreamlike logic. This isn't a passive read; it's an immersive experience, a modernist re-imagining of the Grail myth infused with Greek tragedy and psychoanalytic depth, reminiscent of Virginia Woolf's most daring experiments. Once hailed by literary giants like Ford Madox Ford and Ezra Pound, *Armed with Madness* is a buried treasure of early 20th-century literature, a testament to Butts's audacious vision and a potent exploration of human nature's darker currents that still resonates with chilling power today.
