Anthology of Magazine Verse for 1914

In 1914, the literary world stood at a crossroads. The old guard of Victorian verse still held sway, but younger voices were beginning to murmur with strange new cadences. William Stanley Braithwaite, the era's most influential poetry critic, gathered the finest poems published in American magazines during that pivotal year, creating a snapshot of a tradition in transformation. This anthology captures American poetry in the moment before modernism proper arrived - still romantic, still formal, but restless with unnamed possibilities. Here you'll find work by poets who would define the coming decades alongside others whose names have since faded, all preserved in Braithwaite's careful selection. The volume also includes his critical essays on the year's poetic landscape, offering a window into how contemporaries understood their own literary moment. For readers curious about the genealogy of modern American poetry, this collection serves as a vital time capsule: the last year before the war reshaped everything, captured in verse.
