Anthology of Magazine Verse for 1913

1913: American poetry stands at a crossroads. This curated collection captures the literary landscape in the year before the modernist earthquake, gathering the finest verses published across American magazines. Editor William Stanley Braithwaite, a leading Black literary critic of his era, assembled this snapshot of a culture in transition, poets still working in formal traditions while the ground quietly shifts beneath them. The anthology preserves poems that might otherwise have vanished into periodical obscurity, offering a front-row view of the aesthetic world that High Modernism would soon overturn. For anyone curious about where American poetry came from before Ezra Pound and T.S. Eliot rewrote the rules, this collection provides the essential context.
