Anno 7603: Skuespil I 6 Acter

A satirical play from 1785 that imagines what happens when lovers wish each other transformed. Julie wishes Leander more refined and affectionate; he wishes her less feminine, more warlike. A fairy grants their wishes, and they must navigate a world where their desires have strange consequences. Wessel, writing at the height of Enlightenment wit, uses this fantastical setup to dismantle the ridiculous expectations men and women held for each other. The comedy lies in watching idealists discover that getting exactly what they asked for is rarely what they actually wanted. It's a period piece, certainly, rooted in 18th-century debates about gender and nature, but its core observation remains sharp: we often desire in others what we fear in ourselves. The play doesn't preach; it simply stages the absurdity with elegant absurdity.
