Anna Seward, and Classic Lichfield

This 1909 biography resurrects Anna Seward, the "Swan of Lichfield," from the margins of British literary history. Stapleton Martin paints a vivid portrait of an 18th-century woman who navigated rarefied circles of English letters with considerable wit and determination. Seward emerges as a compelling figure: a poet who corresponded with Dr. Johnson, befriended Erasmus Darwin, and held her own in Anna Miller's celebrated Bath salon. Martin traces her life from childhood in Derbyshire through decades in Lichfield, capturing the personal tragedies that shadowed her work, including the loss of her beloved sister Honora. The biography situates Seward within the broader literary culture of her era, showing how she shaped and was shaped by the intellectual currents of Georgian England. For readers curious about women writers too often relegated to footnotes, this book offers a nuanced portrait of a poet who commanded respect in her lifetime and left correspondence that Sir Walter Scott himself deemed worthy of preservation.
