Ang Katipunan
In the sweltering darkness of 1890s Manila, men gather in secret to speak of revolution. G.B. Francisco's play captures the Katipunan at its most raw and human: not as mythic freedom fighters, but as farmers, workers, and dreamers who chose to fight for dignity when every other option had been taken from them. Through conversations between characters like Josefo, Lusino, and Kalingtong, we hear the actual fears, doubts, and fierce hopes of those who staked everything on independence. This is revolutionary literature that does not glorify war. It examines why ordinary people decide to become extraordinary. The dialogue crackles with the language of a nation finding its voice, a generation claiming the right to determine its own fate. Over a century later, the play remains essential reading because it refuses to let us forget the price of freedom, and the very human revolutionaries who paid it.
