Published in 1908, this is Edward Harper Parker's attempt to make ancient Chinese history intelligible to English-speaking readers who were drowning in dates, dynastic name-changes, and the deeds of forgotten emperors. Parker was a British sinologist who believed the standard approach to Chinese history was useless: a catalog of rulers and battles that revealed nothing about how China actually worked. Instead, he sought to distill the deeper patterns: how geography shaped civilization along the Yellow River, why the emperor sometimes had to flee his own capital, and how vassal states that had existed for centuries eventually fractured the empire. Parker identifies 842 B.C. as the beginning of reliable dated history in China and builds his narrative around the tension between centralized imperial power and the persistent threat of regional independence. This is not a comprehensive chronicle but a guided argument about what matters in Chinese antiquity. It remains a fascinating artifact of early Western sinology, showing both the insights and limitations of a scholar working before modern archaeological discoveries reshaped the field.
