Ancient Britain and the Invasions of Julius Caesar

In 55 BC, Julius Caesar crossed the Channel with two legions and a handful of warships. He failed to conquer Britain. But his brief, bruising campaign opened a window into a world that existed almost entirely beyond written history. T. Rice Holmes's 1907 study attempts something remarkable: reconstructing the prehistoric culture of Britain before Rome arrived, using nothing but scattered archaeological fragments, secondhand classical accounts, and educated inference. The result is both a window into ancient British society and a fascinating artifact of Edwardian scholarly ambition. Holmes navigates the enormous gaps in the record with rigor and imagination, offering insights into tribal organization, material culture, and the limited intelligence Caesar managed to gather about the island's peoples. For anyone curious about the deep history beneath Roman Britain, this remains a striking period piece that captures both what we knew a century ago and how much remains unknowable.
