Anastasia: The Autobiography of H.i.h. the Grand Duchess Anastasia Nicholaevna of Russia

This is the memoir of a woman who claimed to be Grand Duchess Anastasia, the youngest daughter of Tsar Nicholas II, who supposedly escaped the family's execution in 1918. Written in the 1970s through a ghostwriter named Eugenia Smith, the book offers an intimate account of Russian royal childhood, the chaos of the revolution, and the family's final days. The narrative describes Anastasia's life at court, her relationships with her sisters and parents, and the terror of the revolution's aftermath. It paints a vivid picture of the opulence and confinement of imperial Russia, the bonds of family, and the brutality that ended it all. Yet this book exists in shadow. DNA testing in the 1990s proved the author was not related to the Romanovs. Whether she was a troubled woman who believed her own fiction or something else, the book remains a haunting artifact: a portrait of what we long to believe about survival and identity, and the desperate human need for miracles.
