An Irish Crazy-Quilt: Smiles and tears, woven into song and story

A patchwork of voices from another Ireland, Arthur M. Forrester's collection gathers the songs and stories that once lived in pubs, kitchens, and by the hearth. Written in the late 19th century, these pieces capture something true about a culture that has always known hardship yet refuses to stop singing. Here you'll find ballads of lost loves and emigration, tales of cunning peasants and stubborn priests, laughter that erupts suddenly beside grief that lingers. The title is perfectly chosen: like a crazy-quilt, the collection is stitched from disparate scraps, each one carrying its own color and pattern, yet somehow forming a coherent whole. This is not museum artifacts but living tradition, words that were spoken and sung long before they were written down. For readers who want to understand what Ireland meant to itself before the century's upheavals reshaped everything, these pages offer a doorway.
