An History of Birmingham (1783)

Written in 1783, this is the first comprehensive history of a city on the verge of becoming the workshop of the world. William Hutton, a self-made bookseller who spent decades observing Birmingham's transformation from market town to industrial powerhouse, set out to do something no one had attempted before: document his city's origins, character, and astonishing growth. The result is neither a dry chronicle nor a formal academic treatise, but something more intimate, a citizen's meditation on place, told through the derivation of Birmingham's name, its geography, its manufactures, and its people. Hutton writes with the urgency of a man watching history unfold in real time, acknowledging that no proper account of Birmingham existed and that he was determined to fill that void. What emerges is a portrait of a city defined by invention, commerce, and a particular kind of English civic pride, captured at a moment when everything was still accelerating. For anyone curious about the roots of the industrial revolution or the formation of modern urban identity, this is a primary source, direct from the 18th century, unfiltered.
