An Historical Narrative of the Great and Terrible Fire of London, Sept. 2nd 1666
An Historical Narrative of the Great and Terrible Fire of London, Sept. 2nd 1666
A rare, gripping dispatch from inside the inferno. Gideon Harvey, writing in the immediate aftermath of September 1666, gives us the Great Fire of London not as history but as lived catastrophe. The account opens on a baker's shop in Pudding Lane and never pauses for breath as the flames, fed by a relentless wind and a city built of timber and pitch, swallow church spires, palaces, and narrow streets alike. Harvey captures the human chaos in granular detail: neighbors turning violent, merchants dragging coin from the flames while their families flee, the king's own frustration as attempts to blow up buildings backfire. This is not the polished retrospect of a historian but the raw, emotional testimony of a man who watched his world burn. The prose carries the ash of that week in its sentences, making the reader feel the heat. For anyone seeking the visceral reality behind the abstractions, this is an unforgettable time machine.
