An Historical Account of the Rise and Progress of the Colonies of South Carolina and Georgia, Volume 2

A rare window into colonial America from the inside, written in the mid-18th century by a man who witnessed the region's transformation firsthand. Alexander Hewatt chronicles the crucial shift from chaotic proprietary rule to stable royal governance in South Carolina, but what truly distinguishes this volume is his account of Sir Alexander Cumming's remarkable diplomatic mission to the Cherokee nation and the unprecedented journey of Cherokee chiefs to England, where they swore loyalty to King George. The narrative captures the hopes and hardships of early settlers navigating treaties, trade regulations, and the constant negotiation between European ambitions and Indigenous power. Hewatt writes with the immediacy of someone living through these events, making his observations on colonial administration, Indigenous relations, and frontier economics invaluable for understanding how the American South was forged. This is not dry history but a contemporary witness wrestling with the complexities of empire, settlement, and cultural collision.
