An American Crusader at Verdun

This is a visceral, ground-level account of the Battle of Verdun from the perspective of an American ambulance driver who volunteered in the French army before the United States entered World War I. Philip Sidney Rice arrived in France in 1914, driven by idealism, and found himself stationed at Verdun in 1916 during one of the most devastating battles in military history. Through his eyes, we see not the grand strategy of generals but the brutal, intimate work of evacuating the wounded from the front lines, the endless thunder of artillery, and the strange brotherhood that forms among men who share the daily proximity of death. The book captures both the horror and the unexpected moments of camaraderie among the volunteers who left comfortable lives to serve a cause they believed in. Rice writes with unflinching honesty about what he witnessed at Verdun, making this memoir a powerful testament to a particular kind of American idealism, one that crossed oceans to meet the modern age of warfare head-on. The account endures because it offers something official histories cannot: the felt experience of a young man who chose to be there, and lived to tell about it.
