An Account of Valle Crucis Abbey, Llangollen, and All the Recent Discoveries

In the green valley below the Welsh hills, the stones of Valle Crucis Abbey still speak. This 1891 account captures a moment when Victorian archaeologists were first systematically examining what remained of the Cistercian monastery founded in 1200. The author guides readers through the abbey's cruciform layout, its Gothic remnants, and the recent excavations that unearthed tombstones, artifacts, and the foundations of long-vanished structures. What emerges is not merely a catalog of ruins but a portrait of a self-sufficient monastic community that once shaped the economic and spiritual life of the region. The narrative follows the abbey through its dissolution in the late 1530s and its subsequent neglect, culminating in the 19th-century efforts to rescue and preserve what the centuries had spared. For anyone drawn to medieval history, Welsh heritage, or the romance of archaeological discovery, this book offers a window into both an ancient monument and the Victorian minds that first sought to understand it.
