An Account of the Kingdom of Nepal: And of the Territories Annexed to This Dominion by the House of Gorkha

One of the earliest Western accounts of Nepal emerges from these pages, recorded in 1819 by Francis Hamilton during his residence in Kathmandu. Writing at a pivotal moment, just years before the Anglo-Nepalese War that would reshape the kingdom's borders, Hamilton offers an extraordinary window into a nation the Western world knew almost nothing about. He meticulously documents the kingdom's rugged geography, its diverse tribal populations, and the complex customs that defined this mountainous realm. Through conversations with Brahmins, tribal leaders, and local informants, Hamilton assembled an unprecedented ethnographic portrait of a civilization transitioning under Gorkha dominion. The work traces the rise of the Gorkha dynasty, examines Hindu colonization's influence, and explores the intricate interplay of Hindu and Buddhist traditions that shaped Nepalese society. This remains essential reading for historians and scholars seeking a primary source on the kingdom before colonial intervention transformed it forever.
