Among the Pines; Or, South in Secession Time

Written in the heat of 1862, this is a Northern writer's eyewitness account of the Confederacy in its first desperate year. James R. Gilmore traveled into South Carolina shortly after secession, determined to see the South for himself before the war consumed it. What he found was a society both familiar and strange: the decaying grandeur of Georgetown, the complex figure of Jim, Colonel J, 's intelligent and indispensable servant, and a people hurtling toward catastrophe with a strange mixture of confidence and dread. Gilmore writes with the detached curiosity of an outsider watching history unfold, capturing the tensions roiling just beneath the surface of Southern hospitality. The book operates on two levels: a travel narrative of a region in transformation, and an urgent political document asking what this new nation even is. For readers interested in the Civil War era, this offers something rare, a contemporary Northern perspective on the Confederacy not from hindsight, but from the bewildering present.
